The Location of the Dart Board

The board should be setup in a safe place away from windows, breakables and also so no one could accidentally walk into the playing area during play. A light above the board should be mounted so not to interfere with a dart in motion or cast shadows on the board. The best way would be to place it on the ceiling approximately 18-24 inches in front of the board or use a special light that mounts on the backboard.

How to Care for a Dart Board

The board will wear uneven due to the nature of the game with the 20 section being used the most. To avoid this from happening it is a good idea to rotate the ring occasionally. The board should be replaced when the ware and tear on it affects the game such as the bull, double and triple ring area will not hold a dart.

Throwing Distances

American Steel Tip
The center of bull should be 5' 8" ( 173 cm ) of the floor and the oche or throwing line
should be 7' 9 1/4" ( 237cm ) from the front face of the board. This should leave an exact line of 9' 7 1/2" ( 294 cm ) from the oche to the center of the bull which is used to avoid variations from an uneven floor which could be the case in older bars.

European Distances
The throwing distances vary and can be as far as 9' for special events.

The Official throwing distance, for most countries, is 2.37 meters, as measured along the floor, from the plane of the face of the dartboard. In feet, this is 7 feet, 9-1/4 inches. The height of the board, to the center of the bull, is 173 centimeters, or 5 feet, 8 inches. Most importantly is the diagonal measurement- from the center of the bull to the throwing line (oche). That should measure 9'7 3/8"
